A 30-year-old Pawan Yadav becomes Maharashtra’s first transgender lawyer and second in India. Yadav, who lives with parents at Mumbai’s Goregaon, has vowed to give free legal support to the transgender community.

Pawan Yadav also wishes to become an IPS officer. A native of Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav plans to go to Allahabad to prepare for UPSC exams to fulfil IPS dreams.

According to reports, there are over 48,000 transgender people in Maharashtra. However, Yadav aims to give full legal support to the people of my community as they are subject to cruelty and social discrimination. “I have got myself enrolled in the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa. I will start practising in Dindoshi court from next year,” Yadav was quoted by Mid-day.

Earlier in 2018, Sathyasri Sharmila became the first transgender lawyer in India to achieve the milestone from amongst the minority community of our country.

Besides, despite 3 years of the Supreme Court’s decision in Navtej Johar, holding that sexual acts between consenting adults in private does not attract section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the transgender community still face hosts of discriminations that are part of daily life.

Therefore, Yadav said the Maharashtra government must formulate a scheme to uplift the transgender community.

Moreover, with an aim to build a more inclusive society where transgenders find equal opportunities and not discriminated against, New Delhi hosted its first-ever National Transgender Awards on December 15.
