Apple iPhone 12, iphone 12 mini Official, specs, features and price

Apple has officially announced the iPhone 12 with 5G. This is also the very first iPhone to come with 5G connectivity, though it’s feasibility in India is currently unknown. It uses a mix of glass and aluminum construction making it 11 per cent thinner and 16 per cent lighter than the predecessor. Apple mentions that the new 5G antennas have been built around the aluminium frame.

This is not the only change, however. Apple is using the new Super Retina XDR display, which is a huge upgrade from the LCD panel on last year’s iPhone 11, though Apple offered the Super Retina XDR panel with the Pro models. 

The new iPhone 12 is powered by the A14 Bionic chipset which Apple claims beats the previous fastest smartphone chip, the A13 Bionic seen on the iPhone 11 lineup last year.

The new iPhone uses dual 12MP rear cameras consisting of a 7 element lens for better low light performance. Apple also talked about using computational photography for better HDR 3 and Night Mode. 

It’s worth noting that Night Mode will now be available for selfies via the front camera. The brand new iPhone 12 will be available in colours like Black, White, Green, Blue, and Product Red versions. 

Apple also unveiled a mini version for the first time, known as the iPhone 12 mini. Interestingly, it has the same features as the iPhone 12 including 5G connectivity as well as the new camera system but is smaller with a 5.5 inch Super Retina XDR display panel. 

The iPhone 12 mini will launch for $699 (Rs 69,900) while the bigger iPhone 12 will cost $799 (Rs 79,900) when it breaks cover. 

The iPhone 12 lineup succeeds the iPhone 11 models that were announced last year. Though the predecessors were announced in September last year, the coronavirus pandemic has forced the tech giant to push the release of the new iPhones by almost a month.

Update:  Pre-orders for iPhone 12 in US begins Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23. iPhone 12 mini will be available for pre-order beginning Friday, November 6, and in stores beginning Friday, November 13.  iPhone 12 in India will start retailing from October 30. India availability for all models except the iPhone 12 has yet to be detailed.
