Mumbai Traffic Police has started a new initiative to felicitate riders and their pillion riders for wearing helmets. The initiative commenced on April 10.

This is an attempt to encourage motorist and their pillion riders to wear helmets often and follow the rules for their safety. In addition to this, police aim to spread awareness and create a positive impact among citizens.

In the last 15 days, 500 such riders and their pillion riders were felicitated and were also given a certificate of appreciation by the traffic police, officials stated.

For those unversed, as per traffic laws, it is compulsory for a pillion rider to wear a helmet.

Explaining the initiative, a traffic police personnel said that as soon as they spot a rider and their pillion rider wearing helmets, officers ask them to stop and check whether there is any e-challan issued against their bike.

If there is not a single e-challan issued on the bike, then they felicitate riders and also hand over a letter of appreciation.

Traffic officials further added that at the beginning of the drive, they had printed 500 such certificates (250 in English and 250 in Marathi) and all of them have been distributed to law-abiding riders.
