As per reports, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is to hire additional ST buses to run on the route of BEST buses in view of the increase in the number of passengers travelling.

As per BEST's decision, 76 STs arrived at BEST's Mumbai Central depot on Thursday. These STs are being run on crowded routes. With the arrival of ST, BEST operated a total of 3,551 buses on the route.

BEST has 3,500 buses in its fleet. However, due to the condition of some of these vehicles and the fact that only 460 out of 1,200 vehicles have arrived, BEST cannot run all the vehicles. Only 3,200 to 3,300 vehicles are being run whereas the number of BEST passengers has increased to 16 lakhs.

It has been decided to hire 250 ST buses with the help of BEST in view of the congestion of employees coming to Mumbai. The buses will be rented at ₹75 per km, from which fuel, maintenance, driver and carrier expenses will be paid to the ST Corporation.

Anil Patankar, chairman of the BEST committee, had instructed the government to take the initiative and hire ST vehicles in view of the growing crowd.

Meanwhile, in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the BEST has partnered with PhonePe to provide contactless ticketing with over 10,000 conductors assigned a unique QR code. The commuters who use the services regularly will now be able to pay the fare through UPI based QR codes on some major routes without fretting about carrying cash or exact change for their fare
