The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) recently released a report which showed a 77 per cent drop in the bus accidents over the span of four years but a rise in fatalities by 10 per cent in the last one year.

The statistics shed light on the reduction of injuries caused due to bus accidents. It showed that serious and minor injuries had come down drastically with serious injuries reduced by half and minor injuries down by more than 94 per cent in the last four years.

BEST spokesperson Manoj Varade told TOI that despite an increase in the number of vehicles on the roads, the accident rate has witnessed a drop. He said the change had taken place due to the drivers being sensitised on road safety measures.

On the other hand, the statistics pointed out that the fatalities went up, from 21 in 2017/18 to 23 in 2018/19.

In 2014/15, there were 512 accidents which fell down to 116 accidents in 2018/19. There were 85 serious accidents in 2014/15, which reduced to 73 in 2016/17, and eventually fell to 43 in 2018/19.

Officials pointed out that the majority of the accident victims were either pedestrians or two-wheeler riders.
