The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will build a new cable-stayed bridge across the Goregaon Creek to reduce traffic congestion between Goregaon and Oshiwara. The project will cost INR 418 crore. Work on the project is expected to begin next month, and it will likely be completed by October 2028.
The bridge will create a direct link between Link Road and Bhagat Singh Nagar. It will run along the 36.6-meter-wide DP Road. The total length of the structure will be 542 metres. Out of this, 238 metres will be cable-stayed.
The bridge will be 28.55 metres wide. It will have six lanes, with three lanes in each direction. A 0.45-metre median will be placed in the centre. Utility corridors, each 1.5 metres wide, will run on both sides of the carriageways. It is also expected to serve as an attractive landmark in the area.
The plan for the bridge was approved at the end of 2022. But the approval process took a long time. The bridge route passes through areas with mangroves and other sensitive zones. The project needed many permissions from different authorities, like the high court, the forest department, and the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority.
In May 2023, the coastal authority gave approval with conditions. It told the BMC to follow rules under the CRZ Notification, 2019. It ordered that the bridge must be built on stilts. This will help protect the mangroves below.
The authority also said that the bridge should not block the creek’s natural water flow. It said that solid waste must not enter the stream. It also stated that the work should not affect fishing activities in the area.
In 2024, the BMC asked the high court for permission under a 2018 court order. This order requires approval for any construction in mangrove and buffer zones. The BMC said it will plant 444 new mangroves for the 31 mangroves that will be cut down.
The court gave approval in May 2025. The court noted that the bridge is important for the public. BMC officials said the cable-stayed design needs fewer piers. This will reduce harm to the mangroves. They also said the bridge will not disturb the natural watercourse.
