Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is undertaking road widening works in preparation for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR). The roads leading up to Nahur and Sonapur are undergoing widening with the authorities planning to expand the roads from 100 feet to 150 feet.

These feeder roads will ensure a smooth passageway to the GMLR when it is completed. This will also allow citizens to travel from Eastern Express Highway to the Western Express Highway in just 15 minutes. This also means that motorists near the Nahur Railway Station will no longer have to take the footpaths with the roads finally getting much needed attention from the BMC.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Devendra Kumar Jain said: “From S Ward 80 structures have already been demolished while from T Ward 58 structures have been demolished. Apart from it, 25 more structures are in the process of being demolished. We are keen on extending the road to its full width as this will in future be the only connector from eastern suburbs to Western Express Highway. Apart from that, the entire Sonapur junction in Mulund is also being decongested and a traffic chowky in the middle will soon be relocated. This will give a lot of additional space for motorists to drive through.”

The authorities also had to destroy a few illegal structures along the road while also modifying existing legal buildings that were on its path. It is said that 241 structures need to be demolished of which 104 are in T Ward (Mulund) while the remaining 137 buildings are in S Ward (Bhandup).
