The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently been under fire for approving the cutting or transplanting 2,646 trees in Aarey to make way for the Metro-3 car shed. While it is being criticised for being 'against environment', the civic body's annual environment report states that BMC planted 9,721 trees along municipal roads and open spaces from April 2018 to March this year, this translates to an average of 27 trees each day.

The report will now be presented at BMC's upcoming General Body Meeting, which will take place next week. According to the report, of the 9,721 trees, 2,322 were planted in Mumbai city whereas 4,669 were planted in western suburbs and 2,730 in the eastern suburbs.

Displaying how important environment has been for the civic body, BMC also stated that for the better growth of the trees, it cleared concrete and debris around roots of 9,822 trees in the city.

Meanwhile, along with planting trees, the Garden department had also sprayed insecticides and pesticides on infected trees, partly chopped 96,330 tree branches in an attempt to avert any mishap, constructed basins around various trees and brought down 844 dead and dangerous trees.

In order to increase the green cover in the city, BMC is aiming to plant around 20,000 more trees in 2019-20 in areas under their jurisdiction, thus increasing the average number of trees planted each day to 55.
