The suburban railway system is to become far safer for women passengers as the Indian Railways will be installed CCTV cameras inside the coaches of the Western and Central Railways.

Moreover, panic buttons will be installed in the ladies compartment in order to provide women commuters with the option of alerting officials immediately. In addition, high definition CCTV cameras are also on the cards.

This happens to be a good move with regards to ensuring safety for all the women commuters in Mumbai. According to reports, all 208 coaches will be equipped with CCTVs. Around 120 trains will have panic buttons, especially inside the womens’ compartment.

Furthermore, the Western Railways has installed CCTV cameras in 190 coaches, of which 130 are ladies' compartments. They will install CCTVs in 208 additional coaches for which tenders have been floated.

As air-conditioned local trains will be introduced in the next few years, it was clear that this system will be in these trains only. But the air-conditioned local project did not go well as planned.

On the other hand, Sakhi, a WhatsApp group, was formed to help female passengers. It has members of the Women Passengers Association, Women Railway Security Force personnel, Women Railway Police, Women Railway Officers. There are nine 'Sakhi WhatsApp Group' with more than 750 female members. The Railways also implemented the 'Meri Saheli' scheme in Mail-Express trains.
