This year, between April and November, Central Railways (CR) earned INR 100.82 crores from ticketless passengers travelling on its suburban and non-suburban train network.

Around 1.7 million passengers were booked for travelling without railway tickets, as stated by Hindustan Times. It also includes INR 26 lakh collected from 23,816 passengers who were fined for not wearing masks.

In addition, 29,019 cases were registered against those found flouting COVID-19 protocols, such as spitting inside the train compartment and railway platform, crowding at the booking office, among others.

Chief Public Relation Officer of Central Railway, Shivaji Sutar, said that the Mumbai division has earned INR 33.20 crores from suburban and non-suburban train networks.

He further added that they have carried out intensive campaigns against ticketless and irregular travel in suburban and non-suburban trains by complying with the government guidelines and following the coronavirus appropriate behavior.

For those unversed, the suburban CR includes a mainline that operates between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kalyan/Karjat and Kasara railway stations. While for the harbour line, it operates between  CSMT and Panvel and the trans-harbour railway line between Thane and Vashi. The non-suburban CR is a railway line ahead of Karjat.
