Thousands of people across the city and suburbs are eagerly waiting for local trains to be given a go-ahead to carry the general public. Local Trains helped people to travel in a cost-efficient and convenient manner. So far, there is no decision has been taken regarding the allowance for the common man to commute in local trains.

After being shut for several months during the lockdown, the local services were re-started in a staggered manner to avoid overcrowding. Initially, only people engaged in essential services were allowed to travel via local trains.

Railways have given inputs as asked by the State Government proposing that the general public should be allowed to travel by Mumbai local trains during non-peak hours.

As per the proposal, any person holding a valid ticket or pass be allowed to board local trains till 7.30 am, then between 11 am to 4.30 pm and after 8 pm till the end of the services, the letter suggested.

The letter mentioned that time slots between 8 am to 10.30 am and 5 pm to 7.30 pm be reserved only for those working in the essential sectors, having valid QR code or identity card with valid ticket or pass. It also suggested there should be one ladies special train every hour.

From November 2, Railways is operating 2,773 suburban services with the addition of 753 suburban services to the existing 2020.

Railways are hoping that the State Government will revert soon deciding the modalities for providing services to the commuters in Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Earlier it was suggested that Mumbai local trains may open its doors to the general public fortnight after Diwali festival. However, this will happen only if there isn’t a significant spike in COVID-19 cases.

Recently, the teachers and non-teaching staff of schools were also given permission to travel via local trains after Diwali as the education department decides to reopen schools for standard 9 to 12.
