Soon in Thane all public transport buses will be replaced with buses powered by electricity in a phased manner by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) transport wing, said TMC chief Abhijit Bangar.

At present, TMC runs around 300 public transport buses in the city and so far 11 e-buses including a few air-conditioned ones have been introduced.

Villas Joshi, chairman of the TMC transport wing told the Free Press Journal that as of now all TMT buses are running on diesel or compressed natural gas (CNG) and it will be gradually replaced with eco-friendly electric buses.

TMT is also planning to bring double-decker e-buses on streets, which will be operated along the Ghodbunder Road which has seen rapid development over the past few years.

TMC chief Abhijit Bangar said electric buses require less maintenance and it is also cheaper to operate such vehicles compared to ones that run on fossil fuels. He further added that they are in the process of improving the earning per km from the civic buses.
