The Premier Padmini taxi which is also popularly known as the 'kali peeli' has been Mumbai's identity since decades. Every movie shot which wanted to depict Mumbai showed the kali peeli taxis plying near the Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) or other popular stations.

However, these taxis will not be plying from June 2020. The production of these taxis was last done in the year 2000. Moreover, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) recently stated that vehicles that are older than 20 years should be discontinued as it produces a high amount of emissions. The kali peeli have been plying on the road since the 1960s and ever since has evolved into other vehicles like Santro, Wagon R, etc.
