Out of 5844 cases against auto and taxi drivers in Mumbai, over 1000 cases included fare refusals. Other cases were related to meter tampering, inappropriate behaviour, carrying surplus passengers and driving without a uniform or badge.

As compared to 2017-18, there has been a rise of fare refusals by over 66 per cent in the year 2018-19. Although the cases of meter tampering have reduced by 50 per cent, incidents like rude behaviour has seen a drastic increase by 63 per cent.

Delinquent drivers had to face the consequences of their license being suspended. Officials have stated staggering statistics on these with over 1320 licenses, 1241 permits being suspended by RTOs at Tardeo, Wadala and Andheri along with recovering ₹38.5 lakh in fine in 2018-19.

On their counterparts Uber and Ola are a sigh of relief for commuters looking for short distance and rides that are available 24*7 while the traditional kaali peeli taxis would always prefer airport rides.

However, there have been further suggestions to replace the traditional meters with a GPS enabled one which would give accurate fares.
