The first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, is set to start soon. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) started integrated trial runs on the stretch between Aarey and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on March 12.

The purpose of the trials is to make sure that the trains are compatible with various systems. This includes traction, signalling, telecommunications, and track infrastructure.

Now, the reports suggest that the service will begin by the end of this month. This was confirmed by MMRC's Managing Director, Ashwini Bhide, in December 2023.

Once the integrated testing is successfully completed, each system will be certified by an independent safety assessor (ISA). Following this, the MMRC will seek the necessary statutory authorization from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) to start passenger services.

The trial run, first planned to start in mid-February, was delayed due to the ongoing construction of the shunting neck. That part would link the Aarey depot to the main line. Extensive trials between BKC and Aarey are happening to make sure of all safety regulations before the start of passenger services.

The metro coaches for Mumbai Metro Line 3 are maintained at the 33-acre car yard at Aarey. The route from Aarey to BKC includes nine trains and 10 stations. Seven of these trains will be in continuous service, with two reserved for maintenance and standby.

The plan proposes 260 roundtrips per day, from 6 am to 11 pm. This totals 130 services in each direction. The line is expected to serve 17 lakh passengers every day, providing access to key business hubs and facilities.

Alstom, a French manufacturer, has supplied 31 trains for the entire 33.5-kilometre corridor. 11 of these have already been delivered.
