The Mumbai Railway Development Corporation (MRVC) is working on an ambitious plan to renovate four stations on the Harbour Line which includes GTB Nagar, Chembur, Govandi and Mankhurd at an estimated cost of INR 130 crore. The tender process for this project is expected to be completed by October 15.
According to MRVC Chief Public Relations Officer Sunil Udasi, the station improvements will include additional foot over bridges (FOBs), elevated decks, deck/FOBs, skywalks and restoration of service buildings, stalls and kiosks. In addition, entry/exit areas will be extended and green spaces will be integrated into the station area.
Specifically, at the GTB Nagar station, this includes constructing a deck connecting the east and west entrances at the south end, with an elevated booking office that will connect to the Road Over Bridge (ROB) and the proposed platform. "A new home platform 275 meters long and 10 meters wide will also be constructed on the west side. The existing platform will be extended by 75 meters on the north side and a parking area will be installed as part of the improvements. Some railway offices will be shifted to accommodate these changes," Udasi said.
These stations are important transport hubs, with an average daily traffic of 45,000 to 55,000 passengers, handling 425 to 430 trains per day. The upcoming renovation aims to improve the overall infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience of these important stations on the Harbor Line of the Central Railway (CR).
