In a recent announcement, the government has stated that the State Transport (ST) Corporation buses will now be driven by women, who will be given the responsibility of operating the buses as drivers.

Keeping the same in mind, ST Corporation has started training 215 women drivers and dual carriers. Out of these 215 women, 21 are from tribal areas, and this decision marks the first time when women will be appointed as drivers in ST.

Talking about the same, Shekhar Channe, Managing Director, ST Corporation, said that the training for the women has started and they will enter the service after a year. Currently, a total of 4,500 female carriers are in the ST and they have been in the service for the last 10 to 15 years.

However, with this new decision, women will also work as drivers. The recruitment process for women drivers started in 2019 whereby 194 women from general areas and 21 women from tribal areas were selected.

The training has begun and after completing the learner's license training and final test, the female drivers were expected to join the service in 2021, however, the process was delayed unexpectedly due to the coronavirus pandemic. The training has resumed now and as per updates, they will now enter the service in the latter part of the year.

There is a test route for ST at Bhosari in Pune where the final test will be done and the candidates will be selected. Officials had made a clear decision to select women from tribal and drought-hit areas, and accordingly, 21 women are from tribal areas have been selected. Many others are from drought-hit areas, who will be posted in Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Buldhana, Jalgaon and Sangli divisions.
