International passenger traffic at Mumbai and Delhi airports declined in March, according to recent aviation data. The fall in overseas travel has raised concerns within the aviation sector, especially as both airports are among the country’s busiest international hubs.
Industry experts believe multiple factors, including rising airfares, global geopolitical tensions, and disruptions in international flight operations, have affected passenger movement. Aviation fuel costs and uncertainty in travel demand are also being seen as major reasons behind the slowdown in international traffic.
While international passenger numbers witnessed a decline, domestic air travel in India continued to show steady growth during the same period. Airlines recorded an increase in domestic passenger movement, indicating sustained demand for internal travel despite challenges in the international aviation market.
Delhi Airport also witnessed operational pressure in recent months due to runway upgrade work, which affected flight schedules and passenger movement. Meanwhile, Mumbai Airport continues to operate under heavy capacity pressure as passenger volumes remain high.
Aviation analysts believe future infrastructure developments, including the Navi Mumbai International Airport project, could help reduce congestion and improve passenger distribution in the Mumbai metropolitan region.
