The Mumbai Central Terminus on the Western Railway (WR) will soon be renamed as 'Nana Shankar Shet Central Terminus'. The central government has a positive role to play in this regard. The naming process is underway by the central government, said MP Arvind Sawant. Therefore, passengers will soon hear the announcement of the next station 'Nana Shankar Shet Central' in the local trains.

Arvind Sawant had written a letter to Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai requesting renaming of Mumbai Central Terminus as Nana Shankar Shet Terminus. Responding to this, Rai confirmed that the Central Government is positive towards renaming. Therefore, the process will be completed soon and the name of Nana Shankar Shet will be given to Mumbai Central Terminus, informed Arvind Sawant.

In March, the Uddhav Thackeray government sanctioned a proposal for rechristening it as Nana Shankarseth Mumbai Central railway station. Following the state Cabinet’s go-ahead to the proposal, officials said that it will now be shared with the Railways Ministry.

Jagannath Nana Shankarsheth (1803-1865) was a Maharashtrian philanthropist and educationist famous for his contribution to Mumbai's development.

Nana Shankar Shet was also known as the father of Indian Railways. Since several years, various political parties and social welfare oragnisations have been demanding to rename the railway on his name.

The station, designed by British architect Claude Batley, serves as a major stop for both local suburban and long distance trains. Following Bombay renaming as Mumbai, the station, originally called Bombay Central, was also renamed as Mumbai Central in 1997.
