Mumbai has lowest cost of public transport globally, reveals study

As per a recent study, Mumbai has the cheapest public transportation in the world. On the contrary, Mumbaikars pay the most for monthly permits compared to other cities and villages in India

The study compared public transportation costs in 45 cities worldwide to typical local wages. A monthly pass in Mumbai costs only USD 15, making it one of the least expensive places for monthly passes in the study's ranking.

However, if compared within the country, Mumbai residents pay the highest price for monthly passes at INR 3,570. In India, cheapest monthly pass is available to Nagpur residents at INR 370.

The study's methods were based on single-ticket and monthly pass prices provided by regional public transportation providers, and the monthly passes cover unlimited use of all modes of transportation within city boundaries.

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that Luxembourg, Tallinn (Estonia), and Valletta (Malta) offer free public transportation to residents, while London (USD 5.19), Zurich (USD 4.75), and Oslo (USD 3.91) have the most expensive single-ticket costs in the ranking.

London, Dublin, and New York have the highest rates for monthly passes in the ranking. London (USD 271), Dublin (USD 166), and New York (USD 127) have the highest rates for monthly passes. In contrast, Mumbai's average net salary is 2.4% of the monthly pass cost, similar to Dubai and New York.

São Paulo has the least favourable ratio of monthly pass prices to average monthly wages, while Istanbul and London are in second and third place for price to wage ratios.
