In the first 7 months of 2018, 406 commuters have died after falling from crowded local trains

In 2017, 654 commuters lost their lives after falling off local trains. This year, 871 people have been affected in local train accidents

As per the data revealed by the  Government Railway Police (GRP), 406 people died by falling off from crowded local trains while 871 people suffered serious injuries between January and July 2018. Last year, around 360 people died after falling off local trains till July while 654 people died until December.

To curb the fatal incidents, the study had recommended measures that included the introduction of 12- and 15-car rakes, cab signalling, and a Communication Based Train Control (CBDT). Of these measures, only 12 and 15-car rakes were added.

The study also revealed the number of passengers commuting on the suburban network which has increased to 8 million from 6 million in 2011 and 2018. The result of which, 12-car rakes that was designed to ply 2,160 passengers now carry 5,500 passengers.

Niket Kaushik, Railway Police Commissioner said that travelling on footboards and leaning out of the trains are reasons for the rise in the number of deaths. He added that boarding or alighting a running train, or leaning from a train is also a major cause of train deaths.
