The general public in Mumbai is waiting for the Mumbai local train services to resume for everyone. Currently, the trains are operating only for workers from the essential services, dabbawalas, women, and lawyers, however, recently, the Government of Maharashtra asked the railways department to allow the trains to resume for teaching and non-teaching staff in the state, and the students, keeping the upcoming examinations in mind.

Responding to the request, officials in a vide letter, November 19, 2020, permitted the teaching and non-teaching staff to travel by the Mumbai local. However, the commuters will have to carry valid identity cards and students will have to carry the valid hall tickets for Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Education Examinations.

Moreover, this permission to travel by suburban services is valid only until December 10, 2020. Passengers will have to present the valid documents to the authorities to get entry at the stations. The joint media update regarding the same was released by Central and Western Railways, on November 20, 2020.

The railways have also appealed that except for categories as identified by the State Government and as approved by Ministry of Railways, others are requested not to rush to the stations. Furthermore, officials have requested that travellers should follow medical and social protocols as mandated for COVID19.

The Maharashtra government before Diwali 2020 permitted the schools and educational institutions to reopen in the state, however, currently, the school administration is allowed to resume operations only for classes 9-12. Moreover, local bodies have been asked to inform schools regarding testing teachers and other staff members on a regular basis. Students have been asked not to go to the schools if they or anyone in the family develops symptoms or illness. Teaching and non-teaching staff in Mumbai will be allowed to travel by the local trains, under special permission.
