Mumbai’s Metro Line 2B, also known as the Yellow Line, is moving ahead with good progress, according to officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The metro corridor is being opened in stages and divided into two sections: Line 2A and Line 2B.
Line 2A is already operational and runs from Dahisar to DN Nagar. Line 2B is under construction and will run from DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd. Trial runs are currently being conducted on the first section of Line 2B, a 5.3-kilometre stretch between Mandale and Diamond Garden in Chembur. Authorities expect this section to go live by December.
MMRDA plans to open the second phase by next summer. This will cover the stretch from DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar in Khar. It includes stations in crowded areas along Link Road and SV Road, such as ESIC Nagar, Prem Nagar, Indira Nagar, Nanavati Hospital, Khira Nagar, and Saraswat Nagar.
Only the central section, between Saraswat Nagar and Diamond Garden, will remain incomplete at that time. It will cover nine stations in Bandra West, BKC, Kurla, and Chembur. The completion date for this core section is not yet known.
Once fully operational, Line 2B will have 20 stations across 23.6 kilometres, forming a second major east-west metro corridor in Mumbai. Currently, Metro 1 is the only line linking the eastern and western suburbs.
The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has approved the trial runs for phase 1. The Line 2B project is estimated to cost INR 10,986 crore. Its first phase was expected to open alongside Metro 3 (Aqua Line), but it faced delays due to unforeseen issues.
As per the original plan, the entire corridor was to be completed by October 2022. Delays were caused by the relocation of power transmission lines, poor contractor performance, and administrative hurdles.
To coordinate with the upcoming Metro 9, MMRDA temporarily adjusted the schedules for Metro Line 7 and Line 2A between October 12 and October 18.
