The cost of building Mumbai Metro Line 4 has increased by INR 1,274.80 crore over the original estimate of ₹2,632.25 crore. The project is also facing a five-year delay. It was expected to be completed by July 2021 but is now set to finish by August 2026.
RTI activist Anil Galgali revealed this information through an application filed. The RTI application response also showed issues with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Galgali pointed out inefficiencies in project management and administration.

The contract for the 32.32-kilometre elevated metro route was awarded on April 12, 2018. The two contractors were RInfra-ASTALDI and CHEC-TPL. The project includes 30 stations connecting Wadala and Kasarvadavali.
Mumbai Metro Line 4 is designed to link important transport hubs. These include the Eastern Express highway, Central Railway, Monorail, Metro Line 2B, Metro Line 5, and Metro Line 6. It will also improve urban connectivity. However, the delays have disrupted the commutes of millions of residents.
As per reports, Galgali has criticised the MMRDA for failing to manage the project effectively. He claimed that there have been no penalties despite the delays and cost overruns. He called for criminal action against those responsible. He also urged the government and MMRDA to take accountability for the increased burden on public resources.
The project is now 50% over budget. Galgali has demanded a thorough inquiry into the delays and cost increases. The public has also raised concerns on the matter.
