The University of Mumbai urged the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) to restart its internal bus service at the Kalina campus. The request comes after months of disruption due to safety concerns. The service is linked to route 318, which runs between Kurla West and Santacruz East through the university’s Vidyanagari campus.

Earlier in March, the bus service was changed and diverted from the campus. Buses were not allowed to enter the Mumbai University campus and were made to stop only at the gates. This decision was taken after security concerns linked to a former research scholar.

This caused problems for students. Students said they had to walk long distances inside the large campus. They also said the buses no longer reached the main academic buildings. This created daily inconvenience for regular travel within the university.

During this period, protests were also taking place on campus. Rajesh Balkhande, also known as Bhadant Vimansa, had been holding a sit-in protest for a long time. He was protesting against a lack of support from the Pali department.

After reviewing the situation, the university administration has now contacted BEST to restore the earlier bus route. University Registrar Prasad Karande said that a formal request has been made to restart services from inside the campus. He added that the route is expected to return to normal once all required procedures are completed. If approved, the 318 bus service will again operate through the Vidyanagari campus as it did earlier.
