Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the much-awaited second phase of the Uran railway line on January 12. This is the extension from Kharkopar to Uran. This will make the journey from Uran to CSMT more convenient. The Prime Minister is likely to inaugurate the Digha Gaon railway station on the Trans Harbor route on the same day.

At present trains are running only up to Kharkopar station. But if the second route from Kharkopar to Uran is started, inconvenience to the passengers will be avoided. The project, implemented in two phases, started in November 2018 with the first phase of 12.4km from Nerul/Belapur to Kharkopar.

The primary objective of the Belapur-Uran route is to facilitate traffic for the upcoming Navi Mumbai Airport. The commissioning of the final phase will enable passengers to travel seamlessly between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Uran in one hour and 45 minutes, reducing travel time. The addition of Digha Gaon railway station on the Trans Harbor Line is another level of accessibility of the Trans-Harbour Line, which will further strengthen the rail network in the area.

Work on the project was started in 2011, but the project had several technical glitches that took time to iron out and cost increased. The first phase of this project can be completed in 2018. After that, local train services like Nerul-Kharkopar and Belapur-Kharkopar can be started. There are still many hurdles regarding the Sagar Sangam railway station on this route, so the construction of this railway station has not started yet.

It was believed that all the works would be completed in 2022, but now in 2023, even after five months, the road has not started till Uran. People in Uran have been waiting for the connection of local trains for the past several years.
