As all open double-decker buses have been withdrawn this month, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) has introduced 10 additional double-decker buses in Kurla and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

The transport body has taken steps to enhance its bus service and it aims at providing relief to suburban commuters.

Of the total 200 AC double-decker buses ordered from SWITCH Mobility, BEST has 39 as of now. Of which, 20 buses are operating in the island city and 10 in the suburbs of Mumbai now. The remaining nine will be gradually added to the fleet based on the demand.

Other 161 remaining such buses are expected to be delivered by March 2024. These buses will operate from the 12 depots managed by BEST, further improving public transport service in Mumbai.

Moreover, the transport body has decided to procure new such open buses to enhance the ‘Mumbai Darshan’ service.

Besides, it also plans to add more than 4,500 buses in the next two years. However, before procuring more buses, it is planning to set up multi-storeyed parking lots inside its depots

BEST buses are the second lifeline of the city. It records more than 30 lakh ridership every day.
