In response to the burgeoning demand for parking spaces, Pune Metro and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have taken a collaborative step by forming a committee aimed at identifying suitable areas around Metro stations for the development of much-needed parking facilities. This initiative comes on the heels of the recent extension of the Pune Metro, which has led to an increased clamor for accessible parking options.
Coordinated Committee for Parking Solutions
PMC's Chief Engineer, Srinivas Bonala, confirmed the establishment of a joint committee comprising representatives from both Pune Metro and PMC. The primary objective of this committee is to locate viable spaces in close proximity to Metro stations, which can be repurposed for the creation of parking lots that cater to the needs of the commuting public.
Addressing Commuter Concerns
Hemant Sonawane, the spokesperson for Pune Metro, emphasized that while Pune Metro does not independently manage private vehicle parking, the organization is actively collaborating with the municipal body to develop effective solutions. Sonawane revealed that Pune Metro has already initiated communication with PMC to explore potential parking locations near the Metro stations, demonstrating their commitment to addressing the pressing parking concerns of commuters.
Altered Plans for Enhanced Connectivity
Initial plans for parking facilities had been outlined alongside the draft alignment of the rail route, a result of the joint efforts between Pune Metro and PMC. However, route adjustments became necessary due to specific considerations. The rail alignment underwent modifications near the Deccan area, leading to the relocation of the rail construction from J M Road to a stretch alongside the Mutha river, spanning from Garware College to Shivajinagar civil court. Similarly, modifications were introduced to the Metro route originally charted for Nagar Road, rerouting it along the river owing to objections raised concerning the proximity to the heritage site, Aga Khan Palace.
Focusing on Last-Mile Connectivity
In a bid to enhance last-mile connectivity, Pune Metro has forged partnerships aimed at streamlining the overall commuting experience. Collaborations with Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) have paved the way for feeder bus services that efficiently transport passengers from Metro stations to their final destinations within the local vicinity. Additionally, synergies with autorickshaw unions have been established to provide seamless feeder services for the benefit of commuters.
Expansion and Connectivity Milestones
The recent expansions of the Pune Metro system have extended its reach significantly. The Vanaz to Garware College line now includes a stretch up to Ruby Hall Clinic, while the Pimpri-Chinchwad to Phugewadi service has been elongated to encompass the interchange station at Shivajinagar civil court. This expansion effectively bridges the gap between Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune, allowing uninterrupted Metro travel between Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune station, Kothrud, and Deccan.
Joint Resolution for Improved Services
Following discussions between commissioners from PMC and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), a mutual decision has been reached to collaboratively address the parking issue. This decision underscores the commitment of both entities to develop feasible parking solutions near Metro services on both corridors. The move is anticipated to alleviate parking challenges faced by Metro users and enhance the overall quality of commuting experiences.
