Amid the growing demands from activists, political leaders as well commuters, Maharashtra Health Minister, Rajesh Tope on Tuesday said that local trains can only be started if the state speeds up the vaccination drive, for which the Centre has to supply vaccines in ample quantity.
Currently, only government and public administration officials are permitted to use the Mumbai local trains. Since a significant number of districts are brought under the Level 3 restrictions, the local train services are not catering to all. Therefore, there has been a growing resentment amongst people who are questioning how they are expected to travel. Apart from this, even workers and journalists are demanding the resumption of local train services.
Rajesh Tope also tabled a resolution on Tuesday demanding the Centre to supply 3cr vaccine doses to the state. He mentioned that the state health department possesses the capacity to vaccinate 1 million people in a day and has vaccinated 3.43cr till Monday. The health minister also stated that the state has managed to vaccinate the maximum number of people in the country.
These discussions occurred in the midst of Congress Leader; Milind Deora advocating for vaccinated individuals to utilize local train services. Rajesh Tope also said, “If we want to bring the economy back on track, we will have to give utmost importance to vaccination”.
