Ro-Ro service to be inaugurated on March 15?

To strengthen water transport in the state, there was a proposal floated to start Ro-ro service. As per earlier reports, this service was to start by February 2020 but as per the recent developments, it looks like this service will be inaugurated by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on March 15.

The ro-ro service will run between Mumbai’s Ferry Wharf and Mandwa in Alibaug and reduce the travel time between these two ports to just 45 minutes, which by road takes about four hours. From what we have come to know, the fare for this Mumbai-Mandwa Ro-Ro services will range from INR 220 to 550. The price is INR 220 for the general class, while the AC fare will be INR and to travel in the luxury class, one will have to shell out INR 550. Through this service one can even transport cars. The fare for the cars will be determined on the basis of their size and will range between INR 1,100 to 1,900. Every ship that is being deployed has the capacity to carry 200 passengers and about 50 to 60 cars.

The Ro-Ro service is being introduced under the Centre's Sagarmala Project and the initiative is headed by Mumbai Port Trust. Alongside, Maharashtra Maritime Board has also built a jetty terminal at Mandwa, Alibaug. The terminal was inaugurated by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

It is being reported that the ro-ro service will run on a trial basis for now and there will be a ship available at an interval of every three hours. The jetty service is expected to be a crucial aspect in developing the industrial area in Raigad.
