Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a stretch of 94 kilometres connecting Mumbai and the city of Pune will soon start to look like one as the speed limits on vehicles is likely to be relaxed by up to 20 kilometres an hour. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is in charge of the six-lane motorway.

An official from MSRDC stated that private vehicles will be allowed to zip beyond the current 80 kmph barrier through straight roads and 40 kmph through hill passes.

As per the officials, the current restriction is impracticably low, as the expressway is designed to let the vehicles speed up to 120 kmph. Due to its current limit, several motorists have breached the limit and accordingly, they have been fined cash penalties. Last year, the police penalised more than 1.86 lakh motorists for over-speeding and collected more than ₹4.3 crore in fine.

The new speed limits are yet to be decided but it is estimated that the new barrier will be around 100 kmph for straight roads whereas 50 kmph for hill passes. However, before the final decision about the barrier is made, suggestions from the state transport department and automobile engineers will be taken.
