Thane’s long-awaited Metro Route 4 is closer to opening after trials were completed successfully on the Gaimukh-Kapurbawdi stretch. Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said Metro services on the route will start by December 2026.
Sarnaik shared the update on social media. The next phase will focus on the remaining procedures and preparations required before the route can open to commuters. That means the technical, safety and operational processes will need to be completed.

The upcoming service will benefit people travelling through Gaimukh, Kasarvadavali, Waghbil, Manpada, Tikujiniwadi, Dongripada, Vijay Garden and Kapurbawdi. These areas have seen more demand for better public transport connections.
The Metro will give commuters another option for daily travel between residential areas and key parts of Thane. It will also be a faster and easier alternative to roads and help reduce pressure on Thane's roads
The Gaimukh-Kapurbawdi stretch is connected to the larger Metro 4 project. According to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Metro Route 4 is a 32.32-kilometre elevated corridor connecting Wadala and Kasarvadavali.
The corridor is being developed to improve public transport connectivity across Thane and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project includes Metro 4 between Wadala and Kasarvadavali and the Kasarvadavali-Gaimukh extension, known as Metro 4A.
