Various measures are being implemented in order to make the traffic system smooth and free from traffic jams in the municipal jurisdiction. Considering the traffic congestion on the old bridge on Kalwa Creek, the new bridge has been constructed by the Thane Municipal Corporation. Three lanes on this new bridge were opened for traffic in November 2022. While the fourth route was opened in December.
The fifth route from Saket was also set to be opened for traffic by the end of March 2023, however, the said route was opened for traffic on March 10 by the TMC. This has made travelling convenient for vehicles going from Saket to Kalwa-Kharegaon and Navi Mumbai and this will definitely reduce traffic congestion, Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar said.
For the last many years there was a lot of traffic congestion on both sides of the Kalwa Bridge, so the construction of the new bridge was started by the Thane civic body. Therefore, the long wait of the citizens for the completion of the bridge is now over and the load of vehicles on the old Kalwa bridge will be reduced. Traffic from Thane city to Kalwa, Mumbra will be diverted to the new bridge entirely. Similar to the Kalwa Bridge, other ongoing projects in the city have been undertaken on a war footing and efforts are being made through the civic body and other government agencies to free the citizens from the traffic jam, Commissioner Bangar added.
Kalwa Bridge has a total of five lanes and these two lanes from Thane city to Kalwa, Kharegaon, Mumbra and Navi Mumbai have already been opened for traffic. Therefore, the traffic jam in front of Kalwa Chowk, Thane Jail has been completely reduced. Also, the third lane of this bridge lands at Kalwa Chowk and the fourth lane lands in front of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital on Thane-Belapur road. The fifth route is useful for vehicles going to Kalwa, Navi Mumbai from Saket road and the said route is designed in a circular manner.
The total length of the said new Kalwa bridge is 2.40 kilometres and the average width of the lanes on the bridge is 8.50 metres.
