Given the continued increase in coronavirus cases across the country, the Central Transport Ministry has extended the validity of documents related to motor vehicles such as driving license, registration certificate and other permits to June 30 this year. The previous deadline was February 1, which has now been extended.

This is the fifth such extension for the validity of documents since the first such move was announced in March 2020 at the height of the pandemic.

According to an official from the transport department, the extension was finalized to reduce crowding at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across India.

Meanwhile, some of the services have been made available online, while the Maharashtra Transport Department is reportedly working on taking a similar step.

“To prevent spread of COVID-19, all states and Union Territories are advised to accept fitness, permit (all types), license and vehicle registrations as valid till June 30, 2021. The documents covered under the extension are those mentioned in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989,” the notification issued by the Union Transport Ministry said.

The ministry has hinted that this may be the last such extension, which means owners will have to renew their vehicle-related documents prior to the expiration of the newly announced deadline.
