Indian Railways' official Mumbai local app 'Yatri' on Monday announced a real-time in-app chat feature called 'Yatri Chat'. The feature has been introduced to keep Mumbai's 80 lakh local commuters connected and updated during their journey.
The new chat feature will have separate community groups for major railway routes in Mumbai - Western Line, Central Line, Harbour Line and Trans-Harbour Line.
With Yatri Chat, commuters can share updates with each other. They can also get information during their daily commute.
With the new 'Reply' feature, users can now have real-time, two-way conversations. It is possible to ask questions, answer questions and share updates on the current situation. Since the chats are divided by route, the conversations will be relevant and useful for the commuters.
“Mumbai’s local is not just a means of transport. It is where stories are shared, friendships are made, and the daily journey becomes a shared experience. With ‘Yatri Chat’, that same community spirit has now come to the digital world. We are connecting 8 million passengers together.”
When asked how this will be different from WhatsApp groups, she said. “WhatsApp has a limit on the number of members. But with ‘Yatri Chat’ having line-specific groups, the conversation is limited to that route, Western, Central, Harbour, Trans-Harbour, and is useful. We launched the Yatri app in 2021 and passengers immediately embraced it. Now we are keeping an eye on this new feature as well and will improve it if needed.”
In Mumbai, the culture of ‘Train Friends’ or ‘My Train Group’ is truly understood only by locals. Now this feature in the app is giving that experience a digital dimension. This feature can be a reliable source for up-to-date, route-wise information about local trains. And maybe even make some more ‘train friends’.
