Synopsis: A day-long celebration of Bharatanatyam at the G5A Black Box, beginning with a screening of The Unseen Sequence, followed by a Q&A with Sumantra Ghosal and Malavika Sarukkai. A Lecture Demonstration of The Expanding Canvas by Malavika Sarukkai, followed by Q & A. Ending with Bharatanatyam performance by Navia Natarajan.

Exploring Bharatanatyam through the art of Malavika Sarukkai
Exclusively filmed performances, historical re-creations, and in-depth interviews explore not just the history of the dance but also the connections and departures that Malavika Sarukkai makes from a hallowed and, often, unforgiving tradition. Thus, through the art of Malavika Sarukkai, we see how Bharatanatyam is being re-interpreted, renewed, invigorated.

Tradition gives the classical artist a sense of framework, security and belonging to a larger history. But tradition is double-edged. If taken for granted it can become repetitive and clichéd making it a pale imitation. And if it must continue with meaning and depth then change is inevitable. It is this which is a great responsibility for the artist – looking at tradition and change, not tradition or change. The Expanding Canvas will explore excerpts from imaginative choreographies by Malavika Sarukkai where the core values of the form remain intact yet a refreshed difference is created. The choreographies will highlight shifts in approach, technique, and interpretation which in turn make them salient to our times. In this session, we look at Bharatanatyam and the possibilities it affords for renewal and performance surviving as it does in an increasingly fragmented world.
