Omicron Scare: CM Uddhav Thackeray Calls Emergency Meeting With COVID-19 Task Force

On Thursday, December 30, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will chair a meeting to assess the current COVID-19 condition in Maharashtra amid the threat of the Omicron variant, reports stated.

Based on accounts, Thackeray will chair the meeting at 3.30 pm with the COVID-19 task force, remarked the Chief Minister's Office.

Earlier on Monday, a member of the state government's COVID-19 task force mentioned that restrictions for some time will have to be considered if cases of the new variant of coronavirus, Omicron continue to catapult in Maharashtra.

On Wednesday, December 29, Maharashtra reported 3,900 COVID-19 cases. This took the number of active cases to 14,065. From the total cases, the state recorded 85 new cases of the Omicron variant.

Out of the total new Omicron cases, 34 are from Mumbai. Similarly, on Wednesday, Mumbai logged 2,510 new cases of which was a steep rise of 82 per cent over yesterday's 1,377 cases.

Additionally, the Mumbai Police has imposed CrPC section 144 in the island city from December 30 to January 7. Therefore, New Year celebrations that entail parties in closed or open spaces in restaurants, hotels, bars, pubs, resorts and clubs have been prohibited from December 30 to January 7.
