In the backdrop of rising COVID-19 cases in Mumbai as well as the fear of the new variant, Omicron, the Mumbai Police has introduced prohibitory orders under CrPC section 144 in the island city from December 30 to January 7, reports stated. 

In light of this, New Year celebrations that include parties in closed or open spaces in restaurants, hotels, bars, pubs, resorts and clubs have been prohibited from December 30 to January 7.

This update comes after state cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray conducted a meeting with BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar as well as other health officials

According to reports, all public places in Mumbai will be shut on December 31. Moreover, strict action will be taken against those establishments that flout the COVID-19 related guidelines during the New Year Celebrations. Based on accounts, those establishments that violate the regulations will be sealed for the next few months.

Thackeray, however, has urged citizens not to panic and asked that everyone undertake extreme caution considering the significant rise in coronavirus cases in the city. Apart from this, he emphasized the need to get vaccinated and the utilization of face masks.
