In a major concern, Mumbai logged 2,510 new cases of COVID-19 today, December 29. The city saw a steep rise of 82 per cent over yesterday's 1,377 cases. Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded one death due to the infection and 251 recoveries, as per data revealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). 

This development comes on the day Mumbai Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray warned of a surge in the coronavirus casesThackeray remarked that whilst last week the city was reporting nearly 150 COVID-19 cases a day, it is now reporting nearly 2,000 cases per day.

Besides, Maharashtra on Wednesday, December 29, reported 3,900 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the number of active cases to 14,065. Besides, 20 COVID-19 deaths were reported in the day, taking the number of total fatalities to 1,41,496. However, out the total cases, the state recorded 85 new cases of the Omicron variant. Of the total new Omicron cases, 34 are from Mumbai

Last week, the BMC had further tightened its rules and regulations banning the New Year’s celebrations across the city.

On the other hand, today, Maharashtra government also issued fresh guidelines for the upcoming New Year celebrations amid the rising COVID-19 cases and the threat of the Omicron variant.

Moreover, earlier in the day, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope stated the increasing number of daily cases in the state and the city as worrying. He also mentioned that Mumbai's positivity rate is at 4 per cent. Additionally, Tope also believes that there will be a sharp increase in cases reported in January and February 2022.
