Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Wednesday, December 29, announced that the state government is planning to administer vaccines to children between 15-18 years of age.

While addressing the media, Tope mentioned the need to focus on the vaccination amid a rise in the Omicron and COVID-19 cases, enforcing limitations to contain the spread of the infection.

“We need to focus on the COVID-19 vaccination. Therefore, we are planning to administer vaccines to 15-18 years old children in schools,” Tope was quoted as saying by ANI.

He further stated that it is worrying to see the number of active cases increasing in the state. "Mumbai's positivity rate is at 4%. If this goes above 5%, then we will have to think about imposing stricter restrictions. However, we might have to think on putting curbs to control crowds in public transport, wedding ceremonies, etc."

Tope also said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will hold a meeting COVID Task Force soon.

Talking about emerging concerns of Omicron variant, he remarked till now there are 167 Omicron cases in the Maharashtra. Of these, 19 patients have been discharged. However, none of these patients were in serious condition. Moreover, in a major relief, no Omicron new cases were reported yesterday.

Meanwhile, a day earlier, on December 28, which was the last of the legislative assembly session, the minister told that the COVID-19 cases in the state are likely to see a sharp increase in January and February 2022.

The number of new coronavirus cases recorded on the same day in the state was alarming 2,172 fresh infections. Earlier, on an average the state had witnessed an average of 600 to 700 cases daily, Tope exclaimed.

The minister stated that Omicron multiplies very fast. It doubles in a day or two. Since the numbers are low, it is not reflecting. But once it increases, the cases will multiply faster. The number of cases in the next two months will rise sharply.

Meanwhile, he refrained from indicating that further restrictions would be imposed in Maharashtra, but cautioned that the guidelines issued cannot be compromised. Tope also urged the citizens to take precautionary measures and follow all COVID-related protocols.
