On Saturday, December 25, Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope stated that a fresh lockdown imposition in the state will only be undertaken if the daily demand for medical oxygen reaches 800 metric tonnes, reports stated.

On Friday, December 24, the state government prohibited the assembly of over five people in public places between 9 pm to 6 am. Apart from this, it also restricted the number of individuals permitted at public spaces in light of the spurt in COVID-19 cases.

During Tope’s interaction with the media persons, he elucidated on how a complete lockdown will only be considered if the daily medical oxygen requirement reaches 800 metric tonnes. However, he didn’t state the present rate of consumption of medical oxygen in Maharashtra.

He reassured that the condition is under control and remarked that a full lockdown isn’t on their agenda presently. Adding that the administration doesn’t want to inconvenience citizens by putting in place such strict measures.

Nonetheless, he threw in a word of caution by emphasising the need to adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines which include wearing face masks and following social distancing rules. Additionally, whilst speaking about the rising number of Omicron cases in Maharashtra he remarked that it is a cause of concern but the state is prepared to tackle the challenge.

Tope, therefore, appealed to the citizens to not become complacent. He further added that Omicron patients have speedily recovered and haven’t been admitted to the ICU or required supplementary oxygen.

While he does believe this is reassuring he is of the opinion that they have to work to bring cases of the new variant under control.
