On Saturday, December 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi apart from announcing that India had extended its vaccination program to include those between the age of 15 -18, also proclaimed that a precautionary dose of vaccination for healthcare as well as frontline workers and those over the age of 60 who have comorbidities will also be initiated.

According to reports, while vaccines for young children will be made available from January 3, those for the precautionary dose will begin from January 10. Many have gone on to point out that these jabs have been called precaution doses and not the booster shot that many countries across the globe are using.

Based on accounts, the Prime Minister elaborated on how those above the age of 60 with comorbidities on the recommendation of their doctors will be able to attain the precaution doses from January 2022.

During his address, he also elucidated that considering the seriousness of COVID-19, over 141 crore doses have been given in the country. Further, he added that over 90 per cent of the eligible population has also been inoculated with the first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine.

On Monday, December 27, reports quoted CoWin platform chief elaborating on how those above 60 years of age with comorbidities and have taken the second jab over nine months ago will be eligible for the precautionary dose.

These announcements come amidst the rising number of the highly transmissible Omicron variant cases being reported across the country.
