In a latest development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said a meeting will be convened with the state COVID-19 task force “in the next two days” to take a call on more curbs.

This came a day after Maharashtra’s Omicron variant total tally reached to 167 on Monday, December 27. With this, Maharashtra tops the Omicron tally in India.

Besides, Dr Pradeep Vyas, additional chief secretary, said active cases have increased by nearly 61 per cent in the last 20 days.

On the same day, in a presentation before the state cabinet the COVID-19 task force warned of a surge in active cases by mid-January.

According to the state health department, as many as 1,426 COVID-19 infections were recorded on December 27. Mumbai recorded 809 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, December 26, a member of the Maharashtra COVID-19 task force has said that the next two weeks are going to be crucial for the state

Earlier, on December 23, he also revealed that Omicron is probably the fastest-spreading infectious disease known to man.

In addition, last week, on December 24, the state government prohibited the assembly of over five people in public places between 9 pm to 6 am. Apart from this, it also restricted the number of individuals permitted at public spaces in light of the spurt in COVID-19 cases.
