Western Railway (WR) has taken a significant step towards improving passenger safety by appointing Station Superintendents and Station Masters (In-charge) as nodal officers at all stations under its Mumbai Division to address the issue of stray dogs on railway premises.
The move follows directions from the Supreme Court, the Railway Board, and Western Railway headquarters, with the aim of preventing stray dog-related incidents and ensuring a safer environment for commuters.
According to an order issued by the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Mumbai Central, station heads will now be responsible for monitoring and managing stray dog-related concerns at their respective stations. They will coordinate with civic authorities for the removal and control of stray dogs, carry out regular inspections, and take preventive measures to stop animals from entering platforms and other station areas.
The newly appointed nodal officers will also maintain records of actions taken and submit compliance reports to the Divisional Office whenever required. Their responsibilities include ensuring that all safety guidelines issued by the Railway Board and the Supreme Court are properly implemented.
To help passengers report concerns quickly, the names and contact details of these officers will be displayed at station entrances. This will allow commuters to directly bring stray dog-related issues to the attention of responsible officials.
Railway authorities expect the new arrangement to improve coordination with municipal agencies, speed up responses to complaints, and strengthen safety measures across Mumbai’s suburban railway network. The initiative is aimed at reducing risks for passengers and creating cleaner and safer station premises.
