Amid rising cases of the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, a member of the Maharashtra COVID-19 force has said that the next two weeks are going to be crucial for the state.

After seeing a rise in the average daily COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, this month, one question that has triggered among citizens -- is it the beginning of the third wave already?

Talking about the same, on Sunday, December 26, Dr Shashank Joshi, a member of state COVID Task Force tweeted: “Is the 3rd wave in Mumbai round the corner with TPR 2.65% today? Currently witnessing cluster outbreaks, mild disease and less mortality. Delta derivatives but don't know impact of Omicron. Next 2 weeks are crucial. Mask, Responsible Behavior and Vaccinate [sic].”

Earlier, on December 23, he also revealed that Omicron is probably the fastest-spreading infectious disease known to man.

This comes on the day, Sunday, December 26, Maharashtra reported as many as 31 new cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus. With this, the tally of such patients in the state has reached to 141. However, of the total, 61 have been already discharged, said health department officials. Meanwhile, of the new cases detected, Mumbai saw 27 cases, which raised the city's count of such cases to 73. Though, as many as 15 were not residents of Mumbai.

Moreover, on Friday, December 24, the state government prohibited the assembly of over five people in public places between 9 pm to 6 am. Apart from this, it also restricted the number of individuals permitted at public spaces in light of the spurt in COVID-19 cases.
