With the emerging cases of the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has further tightened its rules and regulations for New Year’s celebrations across the city.

Soon after the Maharashtra government announced a curfew, the BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal issued an order stating that no new year parties, functions, gathering or activity in any closed or open space shall be allowed in the areas under the civic body jurisdiction.

The order came into effect from the midnight of December 25 and shall remain in force till the next directive.

Moreover, any violation of this order shall be viewed seriously and shall be punished under sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and Disaster Management Act 2005.

The BMC also ordered that prior permission from the local disaster management authority is compulsory for any gathering, even that in an open area for 200 people for more, reports stated. Based on accounts, earlier, permission was needed for a gathering of over 1,000 people.

The civic also issued a separate order stating that residents arriving in Mumbai from Dubai will have to undergo seven-day home quarantine. The travellers who live in other parts of Maharashtra will be able to leave Mumbai on arrival from Dubai, but their transport will be arranged by the collector.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, December 26, Maharashtra reported as many as 31 new cases of the Omicron variant. Of these, Mumbai detected 27 cases, which raised the city's count of such cases to 73. Though, as many as 15 were not residents of Mumbai.
