Amid the approaching festivity and the new COVID-19 variant of Omicron, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered that prior permission from the local disaster management authority is compulsory for any gathering, even that in an open area for 200 people for more, reports stated.

Based on accounts, until last weekend, permission was needed for a gathering of over 1,000 people. On Monday, December 20, a fresh circular was issued by the civic body chief, Iqbal Singh Chahal. Wherein it was mentioned that if over 200 people are gathering for any program or activity be it social, political or religious, earlier written permission of the assistant commissioner of the local ward will be needed after December 20.

Apart from this, the local ward will also send its representatives as observers to overlook the gathering. This will be undertaken to ensure that COVID-19 appropriate behaviour is adhered to. Previously on December 18, Chahal had urged the citizens to avoid any sort of gatherings and parties during the festivity, remarked narratives.

The guidelines signed by the BMC chief elucidated that in any sort of social gathering in closed spaces, 50 per cent of the capacity will be permitted. This will be done while adhering to COVID-19 appropriate behaviour that includes social distancing.

In open spaces on the other hand, 25 per cent of the capacity will be permitted. In cases where the owners claim that their capacity after adhering to the guidelines is over 200 people, prior written permission of the assistant commissioner of the concerned municipal ward should be attained by them.
