Maharashtra has been reeling under the ramifications of the new variant of coronavirus, Omicron. According to accounts, Mumbai is amongst the worst affected in the state. Considering the present scenario, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief, Iqbal Singh Chahal has urged citizens to avoid parties, gathering amid the approaching festivities, reports stated.

Chahal has cautioned towards strict action against those who aren’t adhering to the rules. In a press release issued on Sunday, December 19, by the civic authority chief, citizens were asked to avoid any sort of crowding, wear face masks, adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines and get fully vaccinated.

He added that owing to the new variant, the condition in many countries across the globe has yet again gone out of control which has resulted in a lockdown like condition. Therefore, Chahal has appealed to the citizens to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols in restaurants, hotels, cinemas, malls, amongst other places.

In the release, the BMC chief said that those violating the rules will be dealt with severely by the civic body’s ward level teams and the Mumbai Police administration. The BMC added that the Maharashtra Chief Secretary has also laid the guidelines to curb the spread of the virus.

On December 14, the Mumbai Police had issued a notification mentioning the restrictions in place and action being taken against those who flout the rules. As of Sunday, 54 cases of the Omicron variant were reported in Maharashtra of which 22 are from Mumbai.
