Omicron scare: Cases in Maharashtra increase to 54; national tally at 153

Out of the six new cases, four were identified at Mumbai's CSMIA, and one each from Pune rural and Pimpri Chinchwad districts respectively.

The new variant of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Omicron, has raised concerns across the country. As per recent reports released by the state health department, six new cases of Omicron were identified in Maharashtra on Sunday, December 19, 2021, taking the state tally to 54. Out of the total count, 28 have been given a discharge as their test reports resulted negative.

Out of the six new cases, four were identified at Mumbai's CSMIA, and one each from Pune rural and Pimpri Chinchwad districts respectively. Out of the four cases identified in Mumbai, two were reported to be from Kerala and Chattisgarh, and one was from Maharashtra's Jalgaon districts, whereby four were fully vaccinated and asymptomatic. The passengers travelled to India from the United Kingdom, Tanzania and Africa respectively. 

This comes a day after the state reported eight new cases, i.e. on Saturday, December 18, 2021. The national tally, as of Sunday, stood at 153.

Besides this, the state had also identified a family with Omircon cases recently who travelled to Maharashtra's Satara district and had arrived from Uganda. Out of the four family members, two children aged 13 and five had tested positive for COVID-19, not with an Omicron vaariant, and the family is reported to be fine currently. On the other hand, a girl from Pune, aged 17, had tested positive for COVID-19 and had come into close contact with a traveller from international location.

Information regarding the same was shared by the state health department officials.

COVID-19 tally in Maharashtra has increased to over 66.49 lakhs with more than 1.4 lakh deaths. More than 900 cases and nine deaths were reported on December 18, 2021, of which Mumbai had 321 cases and 2 deaths, taking the city's tally to over 7.67 lakhs with more than 16,00 deaths.
