On Wednesday, December 29, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister, Aaditya Thackeray was quoted by news agency ANI, elaborating on how Mumbai could cross 2,000 per day cases today.

Thackeray remarked that whilst last week the city was reporting nearly 150 COVID-19 cases a day, it is now reporting nearly 2,000 cases per day. He believes that the city could cross the 2,000 threshold today.

Moreover, Thackeray took to Twitter and urged citizens not to panic, but instead utilize caution. He added that the BMC will be connecting with educational institutions to plan an organised vaccination drive for those between 15-18 years.

He remarked, "We have also asked all the COVID-19 care jumbo centres to be at stand by, at all readiness levels, along with basic facilities to medical infrastructure. Testing and tracing protocols for all that have been operational all through, were reviewed too."

In the meeting, COVID-19 guidelines and public place event issues, especially with the New Year arriving, were also discussed, he said.

Earlier in the day, state public health minister, Rajesh Tope while addressing the media emphasized the need for vaccination amid a rise in the Omicron and coronavirus cases, as well as enforcing limitations to contain the spread of the infection.

Apart from this, Tope also remarked that presently Mumbai's positivity rate is at 4 per cent. If this goes above 5 per cent, then the state will have to consider imposing stricter restrictions, he added. Further, he said that they might have to think about putting curbs to control crowds in public transport, wedding ceremonies, amongst others.

Additionally, Tope also believes that there will be a sharp increase in cases reported in January and February 2022. Moreover, while he refrained from signalling if more restrictions would be imposed in the state, he cautioned that the guidelines issued shouldn't be compromised.
